The
John Howard Society, in collaboration with the Sudbury Jail and the
Sudbury Arts Council, has an Inmate Arts Program in the Sudbury Jail.
Our
goal is to make the Sudbury arts community and general population
aware of the talent lying untapped in our midst, and to assist in
further developing that talent.
Through
the Arts Program in the Sudbury Jail, we offer inmates structured
introductory workshops in a number of artistic media, ie. poetry,
fiction, pen and ink illustration, water color/acrylic painting.
The positive and creative channeling of inmate energy and tension
is proven to be therapeutic and efficient rehabilitation. This venture
will increase awareness of inmates as community members through high
profile involvement with the community.
Through
a Sudbury Inmate Arts Endowment, we provide prison artists with exposure
to and opportunities for expression within the Sudbury arts community.
The
inmate art is shown in the art gallery on the second floor of the
John Howard Society and the profits from the sale of art is kept in
a trust account. Upon release, the inmates receive 100% of the monies
from the sale of the work.
