DESCRIPTIONS
COMMUNITY
EDUCATION
is achieved through displays, discussions and speakers.
The program informs the community of the goals and operations of the
John Howard Society and of current issues in the criminal justice
field. Speakers are available to discuss a variety of topics including
the Youth Criminal Justice Act, drugs, alcohol and incarceration experience.
DIRECT SERVICE
is available for those clients who voluntarily request
assistance or are referred by others. Individuals are seen the same
day to determine the nature of the request and the help available.
We offer one-on-one counseling and referrals to other resources.
INSTITUTIONAL
VISITATION
is conducted on a regular basis at the local jail in
response to requests. Assistance may include contact with legal aid
and involvement with the family.
LIBRARY
SERVICE
is provided on a weekly basis to inmates at the Sudbury
Jail.
PRE-RELEASE
PLANNING
involves meeting with inmates, at their request,
to develop an individual plan of action that can be followed upon
release. This plan is based on individual need and may involve networking
and collaborating with service providers to assure assistance to clients.
Once released, follow-up support is available.
TEEN
SUPPORT GROUP
is a service geared to youth aged 12-17. This primary
prevention program is aimed at developing social skills and encouraging
responsible behavior. This service brings to light issues young people
are facing in today's society such as drugs, violence and peer pressure.
COMMUNITY SERVICE ORDER PROGRAM
is an option to jail sentences and can be a condition
of a probation order for offenders. Individuals are required to work
a specific number of hours of community service work. The focus is
assistance for seniors, non-profit organizations, and physically challenged
persons.
RECONCILIATION BETWEEN VICTIMS AND
OFFENDERS
Reconciliation between victim and offender where both
parties are willing to undergo a group conference to discuss the offence,
the effects of the offence on the victim and appropriate consequences
for the offender. Primarily for youth ages 12-17.
ATTENDANCE
PROGRAM
After school service using intensive cognitive behavioural
program sessions to effect positive change in the young offender's
behaviours. From the outset young offenders are placed in a highly
structured learning environment during a time of day when youth might
generally commit crimes (e.g. after school hours). Their interactions
with adults (staff and volunteers) and their peers are monitored and
positive ways of interacting are taught. They are placed in pro-social,
community activities designed to teach responsible behaviour through
their positive interaction with positive role models in the community.
The focus is on youth ages 12-15.
YOUTH REFERRAL PROJECT
The John Howard Society of Sudbury and Greater Sudbury
Police Services in consultation have taken the leadership role in
our community to attempt to produce solutions for youth who commit
crimes .
STUDENT PLACEMENTS
The agency recognizes the need for students to gain
practical work experience. Our Society accepts student placements
from university, colleges and other educational institutions. The
areas of study range from social work, law and justice social service
work, child and youth work and clerical positions. The student is
provided with an opportunity to learn and acquire skills related to
crime prevention and the criminal justice field.
ANGER
MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
Youth: 6 sessions Adults: 12 sessions. A program that
teaches people to use appropriate thoughts and actions to express
anger. Individuals are taught skills to help understand themselves
and how to identify and express their anger appropriately.
ART
GALLERY / ARTS PROGRAM
In additions to an Art Gallery where inmates/ex-inmates
may display and sell their work, located at 204 Pine Street, the John
Howard Society, provides a weekly
arts program for inmates at the Sudbury Jail.
EXTRAJUDICIAL SANCTIONS
This service provides community based post charge sanctions, outside of formal judicial proceedings, where a young person cannot be adequately dealt with by police cautions, warnings or referrals to community support programs. Primarily serves youth ages 12-17 alleged to have a committed an offense who accept responsibility for their actions.
SUMMER
MAINTENANCE CREW
During the months of June to August, a John Howard
Society summer employee coordinates a free yard work service for Sudbury
and area seniors and those with physical challenges.
